News

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) confirmed the state’s first flu-related death of the 2025-2026 flu season this week. The victim, an adult from the western part of the state, passed away from complications during the first week of October. Despite this, recent data shows that emergency room visits related to flu are trending downward compared to previous years. As flu season ramps up, Wake County is stepping in to help residents stay ahead of illness with a new walk-in flu vaccination clinic. Starting Thursday, October 9, the clinic will be open every Thursday from 1:00-6:00 p.m. at the Wake County Public Health Center in Raleigh, offering an opportunity to build immunity before the holiday season.
The clinic, located at 10 Sunnybrook Road, is part of a broader effort to prepare for the colder months when respiratory illnesses, including flu and COVID-19, tend to rise. “It’s a good time to get vaccinated before family gatherings increase the risk of spreading illness indoors,” said Tina Payton, Director of Nursing for Wake County. In addition to flu shots, Wake Health will soon offer the latest COVID-19 vaccines, with no prescription required. While some residents, like Wilson’s Kara Wood, have chosen not to get vaccinated this year, the county’s efforts continue to provide residents with options to protect themselves.
