Epic Games Lays Of 1,000 Employees Citing Fortnite Fall Off

Epic Games, the Cary-based video game developer behind Fortnite, announced Tuesday it will lay off 1,000 employees, citing a decline in player engagement with its flagship title. The cuts mark the company’s second major round of layoffs in three years, following a 2023 reduction of 830 jobs. Company officials did not immediately specify how many North Carolina workers would be affected. In a letter to staff dated March 24, CEO Tim Sweeney said the downturn in Fortnite activity, which began in 2025, has left the company spending more than it earns.

Sweeney acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, noting that while Fortnite remains one of the most successful games globally, maintaining consistent player excitement has become a challenge. Founded in 1991 and later relocated to Cary, Epic rose to prominence with titles like Gears of War and its widely used Unreal Engine, though Fortnite’s explosive popularity propelled the company to new heights. In recent years, Epic has leaned into expanding Fortnite as part of a broader “metaverse” strategy. Sweeney emphasized that artificial intelligence was not a factor in the layoffs.

Restaurant Spotlight: Danny's Bar-B-Que

Danny's Bar-B-Que has been a steady presence in Cary since the early 1990s, drawing regulars with its simple approach to smoked meats and classic sides. The family-run restaurant built its reputation on slow-cooked barbecue and a mix of sauces, including a traditional North Carolina vinegar style. Owners brought their own influences when they moved to the area, giving the menu a broader take on Southern barbecue while keeping the focus on consistency.

The menu centers on pulled pork, ribs, brisket, chicken, and turkey, with sides like baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and hush puppies. Plates are generous and the setting is casual, with most customers ordering at the counter and settling in for a quick meal. Danny’s continues to hold its place in a competitive barbecue region by sticking to familiar flavors and reliable portions.
