📘More Greenways, Less Litter!

Plus: a snow update

Hey Cary, happy Friday!

Thanks for joining me again this week for another issue of Cary Digest. I’m always excited to write the newsletter and hear your thoughts, opinions, and comments each morning. It has made Tuesday and Friday my favorite mornings of the week!

A quick update on Tuesday’s poll regarding moving to a M/W/F schedule rather than T/F: I’ve decided to do this once the weather gets warmer, and the increased number of events demand the extra space. During these dark, colder days, I think twice a week makes sense, but when things warm up and I have a new idea for a weekly column, I’ll likely go to thrice a week. Thanks for the feedback!

Anyway, here’s what you can expect in Today’s issue:

  • How the town has handled the snow, and what’s open vs. what’s closed

  • A greenway expansion

  • A litter pick up program

  • A charity focused on helping young girls

I hope you enjoy! Please consider answering the poll at the bottom of the email and letting me know your thoughts about today’s issue.

Cary’s Swift Response Keeps the Town Moving Through Snowstorm

Despite a second burst of snow and freezing temperatures, Cary’s dedicated crews worked tirelessly to keep the town running smoothly. The town’s A-Team quickly treated and cleared primary roads, ensuring safe passage for residents. Though Town Hall and recreational facilities remained closed on Thursday, officials kept the public informed through real-time updates, urging caution as black ice remained a concern.

By later today Cary is ready to return to normal operations. Town Hall and recreation centers reopened on schedule, GoCary resumed limited services, and curbside collection moved to Friday without further delays. Residents were encouraged to stay informed using the Cary Collects and GoCary apps while crews continued monitoring historically slick spots.

Cary’s proactive response minimized disruptions, demonstrating its commitment to public safety and efficiency. With only minor service delays and 24 weather-related crashes—most without injuries—the town’s preparation and communication helped residents navigate the storm with minimal impact. As always, Cary 311 remained a vital resource, ensuring citizens had access to essential services throughout the weather event.

Charity of the Week: Brown Hearts Mentorship Program

This week, I’d like to spotlight Brown Hearts Mentorship Program, a local initiative dedicated to empowering girls ages 11-18 through mentorship and community support. Founded by Cary resident Jessica, a mother who understands these challenges, Brown Hearts helps young women build confidence and make positive life choices.

The program pairs girls with mentors who serve as Big Sisters, guiding them through friendships, school, and societal pressures. To introduce their mission, Brown Hearts is hosting an informational meeting on March 15, 2025, at Panera Bread in Morrisville, where parents can learn more over food and drinks.

If you know a girl who could benefit or want to support the program, consider attending, volunteering, or spreading the word. Jessica and her team are committed to building a strong, supportive community for young women.

Town Updates

Annual Water Disinfection Switchover

Starting March 1, 2025, the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility will temporarily adjust its water treatment process by stopping the addition of ammonia, following state and federal recommendations. During this routine switchover, residents may notice a slight change in water color and an increased chlorine smell—both are normal and temporary. The water remains safe to drink throughout the process, but those with health concerns should consult their healthcare provider.

Spring Litter Sweep

Cary’s Spring Litter Sweep returns on Saturday, March 22, 2025, giving residents the opportunity to help keep our town beautiful. Volunteers of all ages can participate by picking up litter along streets, greenways, and parks. The town will provide trash bags, gloves, and safety vests. Individuals, families, and groups can sign up online to join the effort. Whether it’s a small commitment or a big one, every helping hand makes a difference.

New Greenway Expansion

Exciting news for outdoor enthusiasts—Cary is expanding its greenway system! Construction begins this spring on a new 2.5-mile trail connecting Davis Drive to Bond Park, providing more access to nature and recreation. The project includes pedestrian bridges, improved lighting, and native landscaping. This expansion is part of Cary’s commitment to sustainability and active living. Construction is expected to be completed by early 2026.
