Extreme Heat Sends 41 to Hospital—Kids Included

It’s not just you—the heat is actually brutal right now. Since June 1st, WakeMed Hospital has treated 41 people for heat-related illnesses, including three kids. Doctors are basically begging everyone: Stay indoors, take the warnings seriously, and don’t try to tough it out in the midday sun.

ABC11 checked out Downtown Cary Park and, surprise: almost nobody wanted to bake under that relentless sun. “It’s pretty oppressive out,” said local Charles McKenna. “Usually there are way more people, especially at lunch.”

But hey, not everyone’s suffering—ice cream shops are thriving. Ryan Gaines, manager at Fresh Ice Cream, said lines have been stretching out the door and into the parking lot most evenings.

So yeah, best bet? Skip the park, hit up some AC, and maybe reward yourself with a cone if you have to go outside at all.
