📘The future of Cary has been decided

Plus: An awesome, authentic Mexican restaurant

Hey Cary, Happy Tuesday!

I hope your week is off to a great start, and I’m so happy to be writing another newsletter to you all. In fact, I have some big news: Cary Digest has grown to over 2,200 subscribers! This is a monumental milestone, and the rapid growth over the past few weeks is a testament to how connected Cary truly is and how important local news has become.

That said, I have some big news. Cary Digest has grown so much, it now costs me hundreds of dollars to maintain the email list. I’ve been paying this out of pocket while the newsletter grew, but it’s becoming a bit too much. So I have to ask, what would you prefer I do? I pledged to never make a large change without consulting you all, so please answer this poll and let me know your thoughts.

The best options are, as I see it:

  1. Allow for paid support by readers. I won’t ever gatekeep content, but many of you have emailed me asking how to support the local news effort. I’d also be open to donating a percentage of this to a local Charity each month, based on some kind of poll/group decision.

  2. Allow for local businesses in Cary to sponsor the newsletter. This would likely mean a brief message from them occasionally, somewhere in the newsletter. Maybe one week it’s Frantz Automotive, the other it’s New York Bagel & Deli.

So please answer this poll and let me know your detailed thoughts. This newsletter is for you and for Cary, and I don’t want to make a change that I think would be the least-intrusive without your consent.

Which option should I go with?

It's possible I choose a healthy mix, but let me know what you'd PREFER

  • Waverly Place Balloon Test

  • A fun, family-friendly outdoor activity this weekend

  • A field trip!?

I hope you enjoy this Tuesday’s issue. I can’t wait to read your feedback and comments!

News

Waverly Place Balloon Test

Ahead of the further expansion of Waverly Place, the developers will be conducting a balloon test Today, Tuesday February 25th, from 8 AM to 5:30 PM!

This test is a method of demonstrating the impact of the new apartment structure on the surrounding area. Balloons will be raised to the exact height of the building so people can better picture the new development and how it fits into the existing space.

This expansion of Waverly Place has been quite controversial, with strong arguments being made on both sides.

  • If you’re against the development, consider signing the opposition petition.

  • If you’re in favor of it, your best bet would be to attend town hearings on the matter and vocalize that support.

  • Finally, if you’re on the fence, go check out the balloon structure, and make a decision based on the design plans!

Town Updates

Mayor Weinbrecht’s Working Retreat Update

This week’s council retreat marked a turning point for Cary’s future. With the town nearing full build-out and revenue growth flattening, tough choices are ahead: maintain high-quality services by raising taxes, or accept service cuts. Key discussions covered budget priorities, infrastructure challenges, and the evolving housing landscape. Cary’s cost of living continues to rise, with a median home price of $620K and a growing demand for more housing options. The town also faces decisions on balancing property values, suburban character, and affordability as redevelopment becomes inevitable.

A highlight of the retreat was the growing use of AI-driven public safety tools. Police and fire departments demonstrated real-time camera networks, aiding in rapid emergency response—like finding a lost autistic child in minutes. Additionally, Cary’s public works team showcased its efficiency during this week’s snowstorm, clearing roads faster than any nearby municipality while maintaining regular services.

Meanwhile, rezoning battles continue. The Waverly Place proposal sparked an email campaign, with residents voicing concerns over density and traffic. The mayor pushed back on misinformation, emphasizing that redevelopment is inevitable as traditional shopping centers struggle. Future debates on growth, infrastructure, and services will shape Cary’s next chapter.

In legislative news, the North Carolina Metro Mayors discussed looming budget concerns, including a potential $500M reallocation from innovation funds to disaster recovery. At the local level, Cary continues to lead in smart city infrastructure, but rising costs and limited revenue growth present long-term challenges. Expect major discussions leading up to the June 26th budget vote—decisions made now will shape Cary’s future for decades
