Here's what you need to know
Happy Friday, Cary!
We made it to the end of the week which means I’m lucky enough to be writing to you once again. I hope you’re doing well! Earlier this week, I polled you regarding what you’d most prefer: an optional donation program to support the newsletter’s costs, or allowing local businesses to sponsor Cary Digest
The results were vastly in favor of allowing sponsorship to uplift local businesses. However, some of you still wanted to support my effort and the newsletter. Some of you said to do both. Additionally, I don’t think I was entirely clear: no content will ever be locked behind a paid subscription. So, I’ve done the following:
You now have the option to buy a paid subscription to support Cary Digest. 100% of the revenue goes to running the newsletter, and I’ve made one option as cheap as I’m allowed to so that it’s accessible to as many of you as possible and so Cary Digest can become reader-supported. Click here to see more.
I’ve begun discussing partnerships with local businesses. That way they can get the word out on their products or services, and Cary Digest can continue to grow and connect our wonderful town. You’ll see the first one today: Southern Yankee Clothing Company! If you own or work for a local business and want to explore sponsorship opportunities, click here to get in touch.
I’m always working to build and mold this newsletter around your desires. So thank you for the feedback on Tuesday! If you have any other thoughts, you can always respond to this email and let me know.
Anyway, here’s what you can expect in Today’s issue:
What’s going on with Bird Flu in Cary
An awesome (and free!) market this Sunday
How to get involved at Koka Booth
An update on the water disinfection process
Free compost!
I hope you enjoy!

Bird Flu Detected in Cary

A great horned owl found in Cary has tested positive for bird flu, marking the first confirmed case in Wake County since 2023. Other dead birds, including a hawk and multiple geese, were discovered in the same area, raising concerns about the virus's spread. Wildlife expert Chris Turner notes that bird flu is more common in winter when birds migrate and congregate.
Recent cases have also been detected at poultry farms in Hyde and Sampson counties, prompting increased monitoring. The U.S. government is developing vaccines and using artificial intelligence to track outbreaks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states the virus poses little risk to the public, but recommends avoiding wild birds and unpasteurized dairy products.
While human cases are rare, at least 70 people nationwide have tested positive, including veterinarians. One severe case in Louisiana resulted in death. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take basic precautions to prevent exposure.
The Town of Cary has not made an official statement at the time of writing.
