$10M Cut from Wake County School’s Budget

Last week, the Wake County Board of Education reluctantly passed a budget that cuts more that $10 million from the school system. Hamstrung by the continued lack of state support, district leaders voted 7-2 to approve the reduced budget after the County agreed to provide $25 million in funding. Admittedly not an ideal outcome, board members felt they had little choice but to approve the budget and were at least able to preserve special education services.

Parents and educators expressed frustration and concerns that the outcome is still unclear on exactly how the cuts will impact students in the classroom. Overall, costs have continued to escalate despite recent flat enrollment, and the Wake County Public School system continues to struggle with overcrowding due to the number off new residents that streamed into the area over the past several years.
